The Cranial Electronic Stimulator

The Cranial Electronic Stimulator uses transcranial alternate current stimulation (tACS). This is one of the non-invasive neuromodulation interventions used at NCI. We often use this intervention together with active forms of neuromodulation such as EEG neurofeedback. The combination of these two forms of neuromodulation helps decrease the amount of treatment time need to treat neuropsychiatric disorder such as chronic pain, depression, anxiety and insomnia. Combining and active intervention with a passive modality such as tACS makes the changes in the cortex permanent so ongoing treatment is not necessary.
