A neuropsychological test battery assesses various cognitive domains such as information processing speed, attention, learning, memory, language, visuoperception and executive systems. Emotional and behavioral assessments are also included in this type of assessment. The tests results are compared to age and education matched populations of individuals without any neurological or psychiatric disorders. This is generally referred to as a normative database comparison assisting the interpreting clinical neuropsychologist in making a diagnosis. These tests are combined with a comprehensive medical history, neurological and psychiatric examination. The pattern or neuropsychological profile of cognitive deficits, and to a lesser extent, psychiatric and behavioral symptoms, generated hypotheses about cortical and subcortical network dysfunction. Cognitive networks such as language and the attention network are distributed in various regions of the cortex and subcortex.

The cortical and subcortical dysfunction hypotheses generated by the first diagnostic vertical are confirmed or disconfirmed via various forms of neuroimaging.
