These diseases can be simplified and categorized by the following pathologies
Amyloid diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease and its various subtypes.
Tauopathies such as progressive supranuclear palsy, corticobasal degeneration and some forms of frontotemporal diseases.
Synucleinopathies such as multiple system atrophy, Parkinson’s disease and the various parkinsonism syndromes including Lewy-body dementia/cognitive impairment.
Prion related diseases such as sporadic Creutzfeldt Jackob’s disease (sCJD) and Gertsmann Straussler-Scheinker (GSS).
TDP-43 related diseases such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and some variants of frontotemporal diseases such as frontotemporal disease-motor neuron disease (FTD-MND) and behavioral variant FTD.
RNA binding protein diseases such as other forms of ALS and behavioral variant Frontotemporal diseases.
Cortical interventions manipulate neurophysiological activity in specific cortical networks using non-invasive neuromodulation enhanced cognitive remediation and/or specific medications
Disease modifying therapies are directed at the specific disease such as using amyloid removing medications for Alzheimer’s disease.
Other therapies include functional based cognitive rehabilitation, speech and language therapy as well as psychological based therapies to treat coexisting conditions such as anxiety and depression and enhance coping abilities. There are also supportive and behavioral training therapies for caregivers.
