Psychotherapy – the type of psychotherapy used if often determined by the results of the comprehensive psychiatric assessment. Although Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and its variants are often used, not every patient is a good candidate for CBT. Other forms of psychotherapy, including interpersonal including social skills therapy and psychodynamic approaches are also frequently used to effectively mitigate psychiatric symptoms. Psychotherapy has a long history documented efficacy as a primary mental health intervention. Watch Video
Behavioral therapy and behavioral modification including ABA interventions start with a behavioral analysis identifying the causes or antecedents of the behaviors and the consequences supporting the maladaptive behaviors. Successfully manipulating these antecedents and consequences are the core principles of every behavioral therapy treatment plan.
ABA interventions expand behavioral therapy interventions and often use the core principles of behavioral analysis and treatment to improve functioning, particularly with neurodevelopmental disorders such as intellectual disorders and Autism.
Neuromodulation interventions are completed with medical devices as opposed to psychological or psychotropics. The most widely used form of neuromodulation for the treatment of psychiatric disorder is repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS).
rTMS is considered a non-invasive form of neuromodulation unlike electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) which is considered invasive as it requires generating a seizure and the patient requires sedation. rTMS uses magnetic coils to activate or deactivate certain neuroanatomical regions to alleviate symptoms of depression, anxiety, including OCD and has also been recently FDA cleared to treat pain and for smoking cessation.
Other forms of neuromodulation for psychiatric disorders include low and high frequency transcranial electrical stimulation (tES) are used to treat depression, anxiety disorders such as generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) as well as insomnia and panic attacks. The advantage of these forms of neuromodulation as they can be prescribed for home use as a wearable that only takes between 20 -35 minutes daily or every other day to maintain treatment gains.
Psychopharmacological interventions are also used to treat a variety of mood and behavioral disorders. To enhance efficacy and reduce side effects we use results from each patient’s psychiatric assessment, electrical neuroimaging and pharmacogenomic testing.
