Overview of ABA and Behavioral Therapy Services at NCBI

What is ABA?

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is a scientific approach to understanding behavior. ABA refers to a set of operant conditioning principles to enhance learning. That is, the interaction between the behavior and environment is key to effective behavior change.

ABA interventions use the core principles of behavioral analysis to improve functioning, particularly with neurodevelopmental disorders such as intellectual disorders and Autism.

ABA is a specific type of behavioral therapy. ABA tends to focus more on improved functioning via skills development; whereas the emphasis of behavioral therapy has been on treating behavioral disorders.

Why ABA works?

It’s Accountable and Adaptable
ABA focuses on real, measurable results. We track progress closely so we can clearly see what’s working—and what’s not. Treatment plans must be dynamic in order to obtain the treatment goals of improved functioning and mitigate behavioral problems.

It’s Transparent & Easy to Understand
The results of the behavioral analysis, specific interventions and treatment goals are developed together with the patient, their family members and the behavioral treatment team.

It’s Practical & Doable
ABA strategies are designed to be realistic—not overly complicated—so they can be consistently applied to a wide range of patients.

It Works Across Many Situations
These methods are effective in a variety of settings and for individuals with diverse needs.

It Empowers People
We provide proven tools that build confidence—for both individuals receiving services and those supporting them.

It’s Positive & Forward-Focused
ABA emphasizes growth and progress, helping create meaningful improvements and a more optimistic outlook for the future.

What are some of the behavioral interventions of ABA?

Building Skills Step-by-Step (Shaping)

Teaching Sequences (Chaining)

Basic everyday tasks such as brushing one’s teeth and getting dressed are broken into steps and reinforced in sequence, fading out smaller reinforcements as individual components of the skill are mastered.

All behavior is thought to be related to inputs from the environment. We reinforce small improvements, helping individuals gradually reach bigger goals (Schedules of Positive and Negative Reinforcement). We use personalized rewards and incentives to keep learning engaging and meaningful. Negative reinforcement is the removal of obstacles restricting the patient’s development.

Supports to help individuals understand what to expect and stay on track throughout the day (Structure).

Motivation-Driven Learning via reinforcement (Motivational Learning)

Removing and manipulating antecedents / triggers that cause behavioral problems (Antecedent Elimination and Manipulation)

Real-Life Learning (Natural Environment Teaching and Generalization). Skills are practiced in everyday situations—at home, school, or in the community—so they truly stick.
